Water Toxic Leaks to Russian River
River Watch vs. Redwood Oil
Location: Sonoma, Mendocino and Humboldt Counties
Case Number:
Date filed:
Background: Bulk petroleum facility that stores and transfers gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, and mixed oils. The North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board determined that these facilities contributed to violations of water quality standards. Oil, grease, gasoline, and other toxic materials washed from the facilities with each rain. These toxic materials made their way to the Russian River by way of storm drain systems and small tributaries. For example, in Ukiah, the stormwater from the site drained to the storm drain system on West Lake Mendocino Drive. The storm drain on West Lake Mendocino Drive discharges to an unnamed tributary of the Russian River and thence to the River.
RW Action and Results: In the settlement Redwood Oil agreed to: accelerate its cleanup of the site; make available to RW, at its cost, any and all documents concerning site remediation; allow RW right to enter and inspect the property for the purposes of compliance with the settlement agreement; comply with all RWQCB time schedules and orders.
